Brunel University Poster

Recently, we were approached by London university, Brunel. They asked us to create a new poster to be used throughout their campus. We are proud to say that we are now official suppliers to the prestigious university and really enjoyed this exciting project.

Whether you have lived and studied in London or not, you may well have heard of Brunel. Speed demon Usain Bolt gave them a mention and thanked them for their support during his interview with the BBC, shortly after his amazing Olympic relay performance. Novelist and journalist Will Self has recently joined them as Professor of Contemporary Thought. In short Brunel is a world class university.

Their new building has been a huge project for them, we decided to feature this in the new poster design. We also incorporated sharp lines and the university colours to create a poster which is eye catching, timeless and informative.

Louis Vuitton’s Packing Tool

Have you seen the visual interactive guide to packing on the Louis Vuitton website? If not, it’s worth a look whether you are lucky enough to be jetting off or not.

Not short of a few bob, retail giants Louis Vuitton know how to spend it when it comes to online promotions. They awarded Ogilvy Interactive Paris the prestigious Global Digital Strategy account back in 2009 and their online presence has been nothing short of astounding ever since.

You can have a play with the packing tool here

Fashion and luxury brands are often at the fore when it comes to new promotional techniques and ideas. Louis Vuitton was the first luxury brand to launch an official Twitter account, as the first step in its fully integrated digital communications strategy and has reached an impressive level of more than 47,000 members to date.

Their interactive website is beautifully designed and engaging and they continue to push marketing boundaries with innovative online campaigns and ideas that keep their clients happy, and more importantly, loyal.

You don’t need LV’s budget to create your own, effective marketing strategies. Considered techniques and a willingness to explore new ideas will help you and your company move forward. Take inspiration from the giants of the industry and see what you can do to replicate their success.

Here at ADOmedia, we offer full marketing solutions from branding and printed literature, to interactive websites, social strategy and effective marketing services.

If you would like some advice about how best to begin your campaign, give us a call. We will be happy to help.

Corporate ID Design for Monsieur Appert

We just love this beautiful identity design by Diogo Nascimento & Mariano Pascual for traditional preserved fruit and vegetables business, Monsieur Appert.

“Monsieur Appert, a preserved fruit and vegetables business with a French spirit that works with the tradition of the natural method and pays homage to the figure of the cook who has discovered the formula for preserving food: Nicolas Appert”

We think the design duo have really nailed this one. Beautiful vintage illustration combined with the bold, modern typeface and sharp, minimalist logo offer impact and timeless style.

ADOsquad Team Member Focus – Scott Tyzack

A few years ago, just a mere whipper snapper, Scott Tyzack joined us for a weeks work experience.

Back then we were just a two man band in a tiny office with a kitchen that smelled a bit like feet. Scott did a grand job and we were sad to see him go as he made his way back to Leeds to complete his studies.

Two years later, he has returned to us! a little older, a little wiser and complete with a degree in multimedia technology. He has been working very hard in our now slightly bigger studio, with a slightly fresher kitchen and slightly larger team – The ADOsquad as we like to refer to ourselves (it makes us feel good)

Making his way as a junior designer, Scott has taken to the role with aplomb and we are starting to wonder what we did without him.

We decided to make the most of his time here today and badger him to answer a few questions for the blog. Here are the results…

Q. So Scott, what made you want to be a designer?

A. Well, I took the course at Leeds Met because I’ve always loved computers, but I was never really interested in the technical side of them. I was always more focused on the internet and the visual aspects of how websites looked and performed.

Q. OK, so what inspires you visually?

A. Typography. Anytime I see a really cool piece of typographical design, I wonder how I could use that idea and work it into something else.

Some of Scott’s typography inspired poster designs

Q. Would you say that is part of your research process?

A. hmmm yeah. My design process usually includes a bit of research on the web, then when I have found my inspiration I like to just get stuck in and try out every idea I came across until I find one that I feel works the best.

I always try to get some feedback from a number of different people to see what their thoughts are. There are always plenty of people in the studio happy to give their opinion!

Scott designed our new avatar, you may have seen it dotted about on our social pages

Q. Best things in life?

A. Budweiser, my mac book pro, festivals and my girlfriend, Sammie. – (all together now, Ahhhh)

Q. Now you’ve joined the ranks of the working masses, what do you miss the most about student life?

A. It’s got to be the drinking (typical student) The Macclesfield nightlife just doesn’t cut the mustard in comparison to Leeds.

Q. Ah yes, the drinking. It’s no wonder you fit in so well here. What are your favourite things about working in ADO towers?

A.
Great people, great working atmosphere and the fact that I’ve got no travel expenses (cheers mum!)

Q. And the worst?

A.
The stairs, so many stairs!

A website banner design for First & Only Airsoft

Well, we hope you have enjoyed today’s little insight in to the world of ADOmedia. Our squadron members love what they do (despite the stairs) and that’s what keeps us all going. We love fresh perspectives, innovation and creativity. Our team is growing and our capabilities are expanding.

Keep checking the blog and social pages for more updates about our team, our work and what we are getting up to. If you are looking for a work placement, get in touch. Like Scott, you might just be able to become an honorary ADOsquad member.

No Doubt Album Artwork by El Mac

Today, punky popsters No Doubt revealed the artwork for their forthcoming album, Push and Shove. The band worked together with street artist and muralist El Mac to create the striking cover design. What do you think? Do you like it?

El Mac’s work is intricate and detailed, and he has become famous on the street art scene.

His brushwork pieces, created with acrylics, are also pretty astounding –

Annoyingly, he is also amazing with the a simple pencil, just look at this beautiful sketch work.

A truly talented artist. You can see more of his work on his website, elmac.net

Fashion Week Invites A/W 2012

Those fashion-y folk don’t skimp when it comes to promoting their collections. Seriously expensive photography, incredible advertising and beautifully crafted print work are pretty standard stuff in the world of designer goods.

This year’s invitations for New York fashion week A/W 2012 were no exception. We have picked our favourites, an amazing showcase of design and print innovation.

Haider Ackermann’s minimalist textured card was broken up with beautiful calligraphy-style printing, whilst Hermes understated white outer opened to reveal a luxurious cloth lined floral interior.

Céline’s giant-sized fold-out poster featured a screen-printed effect with vibrant colour and cool vintage imagery.

Chanel’s signature monochrome invitation features a panelled overlay, which slowly and tantalisingly reveals it’s contents as the card slides open.

Meadham Kirchhoff chose a vivid punk ere style theme with bold clashing colours and comic book style artwork and illustrations.

Roger Vivier’s invitations open to reveal an intriguing multi-layered graphic series of intricate die-cut Parisian landmarks

Reed Krakoff’s launch invitation was lined with a grey felt cover, which was apt as he was exhibiting felt-covered chairs at Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn’s gallery

Paintbrush Packaging

Here at ADOtowers we love a bit of facial plummage. We also love nice bit of clever packaging design. So this design by Poilu is right up our street.

After all, why does packaging need to be boring? We would be far more inclined to select these brilliantly designed packages off the shelves of B&Q…

But they don’t just look funny, oh no. They are practical too. According to Poilu –

“This humoristic packaging offers the function of assembling two products (two paintbrushes) together with only one cardboard printed on both sides. One paintbrush is a big one and the other is a small one for finishing touches. Once it’s folded, the package has two utilities: 1. Protecting paintbrushes when he is shipped. 2. Supporting the paintbrushes when it’s full of paint. Each paintbrushes has been named and linked to a size number to identify them”

Poster Design by Scott Tyzack

Recently we have been lucky enough to work on some great design projects, one of our favourites – poster design.

Poster design gives us an opportunity to get really creative and we love it. ADOsquad member Scott has been busy designing this fantastic poster to promote a festival in his home town of Bollington.

We love the understated, industrial feel and minimal use of colour and texture. A really effective piece, let us know if you see it around!

We have a few more to share with you, keep an eye out for those in the next few weeks.

Design London 2012

London’s Olympic games 2012 is in full swing and we have to say, we have been impressed! Who could fail to feel at least little patriotic after Danny Boyle’s wild and, in our opinion, stupendous opening ceremony?

Although we found the official branding a little, uninspiring, we have been truly astounded by other aspects of the Olympics and the designers involved.

From the award winning torch design by east London designers BarberOsgerby to that incredible Olympic cauldron designed by the fantastic Thomas Heatherwick, London 2012 has been a veritable feast for the eyes.

Heatherwick’s designs for the Velodrome are no less astounding, his signature innovation makes his inspirational work second to none.

Monica Bonvicini’s sculpture for the 2012 london olympics ‘art in the park’ programme act as a mirror for visitors and their surroundings, and at night the letters will become transparent
and glow with internal LED lighting.

Apparently work is derived from musical references such as ‘running dry’ by neil young and the velvet underground song ‘run run run’,

The games have inspired designers all over the world to come up with their own, concept designs. Here are some of our favourites (via Creative Inspiration)

We love that the games have inspired so many ideas, and so much creativity. An event that is great not only for the world of sport but for the world of design. Fantastic.

Bank of Dave

Have you watched Bank of Dave yet? If not, get thee to 4od and set aside some time.

Car singing, Ferrari driving, Burnley loving Dave, is a man it is nigh on impossible to dislike. That is, unless you are one of the ‘big banks’.

Dave from Burnley works hard and has already made himself some money, this is evident throughout the program as we watch him race around in his red Ferrari and polish his helicopter. Far from being affected, Dave appears to know everyone in his home town. The big bucks Dave has made, have come through his mini bus business, the largest in the country no less.

When the big banks stopped lending, it was bad for the mini bus business and Dave knew he had to do something. His customers could no longer access the required funding to purchase their mini busses, so he lent them the money. As a face-to-face business man, Dave insists on personally meeting each potential borrower over a nice cup of tea to assess whether he can trust them. He does appear to trust practically everyone, which is a slight concern. However, through this experience came light bulb moment.

Why don’t banks work this way?

“The b*stard banks… £50 billion, how can you lose £50 billion and still pay bonuses?” It’s a fair point. Dave’s idea is to create a tiny bank in his beloved Burnley. One that pays out 5% on savings (the very best rate in the country) and lends to those who need it. Getting money back into the community and regenerating local business.

This is where we pricked our ears up. We know only too well how hard it can be as a small business. Cash flow can be a serious problem for any business and if the banks won’t lend, great businesses that just need a bit of help will die. We think that’s a major problem.

Dave has certainly not found the process of setting up his bank easy. He is up against some major financial giants, guffawing from their gleaming top floor offices as they watch him struggle to play by their ancient, biased and overblown rulebook. But, as I’m sure you will see from his documentary, he has done it. In a way.

What he has also succeeded in doing is creating some serious hype. This is a project that people believe in, that people empathise with and want to be a part of. The Bank of Dave Facebook page has already reached well over 2000 likes and the Twitter buzz grows louder each day. Today a viral ‘Bank of Dave’ game was launched. It’s small steps, but ones with real purpose.

Last weeks episode showed that Dave has achieved his goals so far, and his tiny bank has made a profit, which is more than any of the banking giants have succeeded in doing in a long time. One things for sure, Dave is making waves. I think the financial giants may just have stopped laughing.

Watch the previous episodes on 4od, the next episode will be shown tonight at 8pm on 4Seven. You can read more in an interview with the man himself, here.

ADOsquad Team Member Focus – Posters by Ben Oldham

Back in May, Sheffield Hallam University student Ben Oldham, joined us for a few weeks on a work placement. We have been sprucing up our studio and needed some new artwork for the walls. We set Ben on the task and the results, as you can see, are superb.

We gave Ben the brief of depicting a move from old to new, representing the company’s changing direction and exciting new developments. He took on the brief with gusto and selected vintage imagery which he combined with modern geometric shape and line.

We think the results are fantastic and we will be getting the artwork printed up and placed on the studio walls very soon. It’s great to have such talented placements working with the team, not only do we get to give them the help and advice that they need, but we also get to see their fresh and undiluted perspective on design.

Pretty awesome work don’t you think? We predict big things for young Mr Oldham. We would like to say a huge thanks to Ben for his hard work while he was here working with us. We are sure that we will see him again in future.

Interactive Billboard

We all like to think that when confronted with a violent situation, we would stand up for what’s right. However, in reality these frightening scenarios will often cause people to turn away. Public service employees in the Netherlands are increasingly facing violence on the streets. Onlookers often leave the situation through fear and confusion and choose not to intervene.

This clever billboard campaign placed in in Amsterdam and Rotterdam uses live interactive technology to literally mirror these situations and force people to confront their own reactions to these events. Watch the video for more information. Clever stuff.

Family Tree Project

There is something truly disturbing about the Family Tree project photographs by New York photographer, Bobby Neel Adams. And yet, we have found ourselves marveling at them in awe and wonder. Incredibly, there is no Photoshop involved in the manipulation of these photographs featuring family members. Instead, the artist has carefully crafted photographs of relatives who have very similar facial proportions. As you can see, the results are astounding.

BMW M5 – Bullet Art Advert

What happens when a huge company with a vast budget decide to create a statement film to advertise their product in a fascinating and innovative way? Well…. this. Watch the video below to find out more…

Called “Bullet Art”, BMW Canada presented this amazing video whilst hosting a talk about the M5 model. The super slow-motion footage is designed to highlight the cars durability, speed and performance. Either way, we love it and can’t help but feel a wee bit jealous of the people who got to work on this project. Superb.

New Super-detailed 3D City Maps on Google Earth 7.0 for Mobile

It’s a fact, mobile internet is growing and it certainly isn’t going anywhere. As such, developments for mobile devices are coming thick and fast.

A few weeks ago, during the the Google I/O Keynote, it was announced that Google Earth for Android has now been updated to take full advantage of new 3D map technology. This update means that exploring a city in an interactive way is now possible in full 3D, with detailed images as small as trees and cars, all in the palm of your hand. Much like flying over a city in a helicopter, these new updates create the most realistic experience yet. Android users can head over Google Play to get the update today; iOS users will get the new maps soon.

Not content to just show you these places in full detail, Google now also offer a tour guide service allowing you to explore cities with ease and gain useful information at the same time.

“Not sure where to begin? Let the new tour guide help show you the way. We’ve put together short tours of thousands of famous places and historical sites across the globe so it’s easier than ever to discover amazing places. Just pull up the tab at the bottom of the screen to open the tour guide. Each image highlights a tours or place of interest in the area you are looking. Click on an item and you will be flown there. As you fly in and around the sites, snippets from Wikipedia provide additional information about the location. It’s like having a local expert right beside you!” – Google Lat Long Blog

Currently, there are just a few cities covered, mostly in the US (San Francisco Bay, Boulder, Boston, Charlotte, Lawrence, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Tampa) with Rome being the only international hotspot. However, Google plan to roll out 3D coverage and by the end of the year they “aim to have new 3D coverage for metropolitan areas with a combined population of 300 million people”

These developments never fail to astound us, we love to watch in awe as Google show us the vast possibilities of mobile internet. Nice one Google. What’s next?

You can download the app for yourself, here.

Bauhaus Exhibition at the Barbican

This summer, London’s Barbican center is home to the biggest Bauhaus exhibition in the UK in over 40 years. The modern world’s most famous art school is renowned for it’s utopian vision to change society in the aftermath of the First World War. Bauhaus: Art as Life feature a rich array of painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theater and installation.

Bauhaus style is somthing we have loved since our college days. Bold understated design which looks as fresh today as it must have done all those years ago. The principles of these designs are inspiring from a creative point of view and intriguing as a historic reference to all things creative.

The exhibition runs now until 12th August. You can find out more here.

Moonrise Kingdom Website

If like us, you are fans of Wes Anderson’s quirky style and beautiful cinematography, you will already have seen or will be vying to see the long anticipated Moonrise Kingdom. Beautifully designed and immaculately styled, the film is a wonder to behold for it’s looks alone. The fact that the emotionally charged story is superbly executed and played out by a cast of our favourite actors is simply the icing on the cake.

Dolloping more icing on our cake is the website which accompanies the film. Moonrisekingdom.com features lots of relevant information about the movie which can be sourced by scrolling your compass around the beautifully styled dynamic map.

You can learn more about the characters, take a look at some videos, read more about the story and even see some behind the scenes footage. We particularly enjoyed the set tour presented by the legend that is, Bill Murray.

The one and only negative we can find is the fact that, due to Mr Jobs hatred of Adobe Flash, the website will not work on apple devices. A small detail that we will overlook. Like the movie, it sure looks great on a big screen. www.moonrisekindom.com

Lego Studios

Ever dreamed of a work place where you can play with Lego and hold the occasional Foosball tournament? A vast and stylish space where a trip downstairs doesn’t involve a weary trudge, but an exhilarating whizz down a metal slide? Well, start writing your application to LEGO PMD. Oh, and you will need to relocate to Denmark.

“Lego’s designers are the luckiest in the world – they get to play with Lego all day long! Now, the designers of LEGO’s development department, LEGO PMD, has a physical working environment that corresponds to its playful content – a working environment where fun, play and creativity are paramount and where the physical design gives the adults a chance to be part of children’s play” – Designer, Rosan Bosch

Alternative Olympic Designs

Now, we never like to be negative about others design work (unless of course, it is truly terrible!) but we have to say that the branding for this years Olympics is something we find… less than inspiring. However, we have found some alternative artwork which is fantastic. Sadly, this won’t be in official use for the games but that won’t stop us from admiring it.

This Bauhaus inspired minimalist poster by Stuart Watson is stylish, eye-catching and inspiring. We love the bold colours and geometric shapes.

This pictogram style poster by Brent Couchman also encompasses a minimalist style and crisp understated colours.

But our real favourites are these clean and classic poster designs by University College Falmouth student, Alan Clarke. Fantastic.

Designers take note, less is often more. Olympic organisers take note, however many millions you paid for that branding: you could have got it better, and cheaper, from a student.

Henrique Oliveira

Occasionally we like to take a step back from the computer, forget about graphics, coding and marketing whatnot and be inspired by a good old bit of art.

Inspiring us this week are the amazing sculptural installations from Brazilian artist, Henrique Oliveira. The pieces encompass wood, hardware and paint techniques to create these astounding installations –

His work is exhibited around the world. For more information, take a look here.

Jubilee Packaging Design

If you’re anything like us, you will be so over the Jubilee by now. Yes, we all enjoyed the bonus days off and that warm fuzzy feeling of national pride. But now we’re back at work and facing the horrible realization that those boozy bonus days have left us with a backlog of work to catch up on. Call us grumpy, but if we see another plastic union jack whipping around against the soggy grey sky, we may have to rip it down.

Retailers well and truly cashed in on the Jubilee celebrations, covering everything in sight with flags, crowns and our dear old Queens face. Whilst many of them are brash and obvious, some retailers really struck the right note. It positively warmed the cockles of our hearts when we laid our peepers on Kellogg’s limited edition vintage packaging during a weary trudge around Sainsburys.

Using authentic Kellogg’s drawings dating back to the 1950s when the Queen ascended the throne, boxes will be on sale for a limited time only from 22 April 2012 to 25 June 2012. The boxes include the first Coco the monkey design and original Snap, Crackle and Pop characters, with Corn Flakes and Frosties also getting a makeover. We think they are a vast improvement on the current designs.

Other brands have also offered up some stylish Jubilee inspired packaging. Good old Marks & Spencer used the classic illustration of artist Phil Hankinson to create some fantastic packaging design for their cakes and biscuits.

Other brands utilizing a classic vintage style include Kleenex, Cadburys and of course, that timeless and truly British institution, Fortnum & Mason –

Far from the brash and cheesy designs many companies chose to adopt, these brands have saved the day. They have made the most of the occasion by selecting a distinguished approach, classic illustration and timeless design for their Jubilee promotions. Classic British style from flagship brands. Gawd bless em’.

Red Willow Online Store is Launched

Last week we launched the newest addition to the Red Willow Brewery website. Those with a taste for the finer things, such as delicious beer, really ought to take a gander.

Red Willow award winning range of bottled beers

Our e-commerce package has been implemented into the Red Willow website, allowing the superb micro brewery to sell their products online, directly to their loyal and ever expanding legion of fans.

Toby, owner and beer wizard extraordinaire takes time to create only the finest beer from quality ingredients. He doesn’t rush the process or take a quick fix approach. This means that his beers are some of the finest around. His is an ethos that we like.

Red Willow Brewery online shop screen grab

We feel that this approach is something that should be applied to everything you create, and we like to think that this shows with the Red Willow website. Toby was keen to work with us to create a website which reflected his ideals. A well designed, quality, bespoke website that offered longevity as well as representing his company in a stylish manner.

No template designs, no short term, quick fix solutions. Quality graphics from qualified designers and functional build from skilled developers. This is our company ethos and people like Toby are just our sort of client. A man with an appreciation of quality and an understanding of a good investment. The fact that he brews and sells a damn fine beer is just the icing on the cake!

Branding for New York Museum of Art & Design

As a smaller business, we feel that it is of great importance to look to larger and long established agencies for inspiration. A company we have long admired is legendary design consultancy, Pentagram. This incredible agency consistently create work which is fresh, diverse and forward thinking.

A great case in point is this identity created for New Yorks Museum of Art & Design. After relocating to the iconic building, no. 2 Columbus Circle following an extensive redesign, the museum decided that a new image was required.

Pentagram faced a challenging brief to create an identity which is punchy and compelling, yet versatile enough to be used across all mediums from print, web and packaging, to bags, t-shirts and paraphernalia, on the sides of buses, on street banners, in print ads and in the subways.

Of course, pentagram rose to challenge with serious style, developing a logo which perfectly represented the iconic New York building and it’s new resident.

Not content with designing this superb logo, they also developed an entire typeface to use with it on all promotional items. Entitled MAD face, the new typeface can be seen throughout the museums new ID.

Although this project is not a new one, it is certainly a timeless one. This project is inspiring not only for our designers, but for our clients and business owners of all capacities. It is sometimes difficult to make a move from your established branding, but it can also be a move that, when executed well, can really pay off. Clinging on to tired old branding can be damaging. It is often a business owners apprehension that a new company look or branding will lose faith from established customers. We feel however, that if your new branding is done well, it can only be a great thing.

Hows your branding looking? feeling inspired to take on a fresh new look? Why not give us a call? We will be happy to advise you.

Carton Shaped Fruits Created for Advertising

When Brazilian agency AGE Isobar were given the task by their client, Camp, to advertise the fact that their fruit juice drink is all natural, they really went the extra mile.

They decided against spending the vast advertising budget on the usual expensive macro shots of dew covered fruits, glistening in the sun, or aspirational lifestyle shots of lush green fields and organic produce. Instead they decided to take a much more tactile approach which would ensure that Camp’s target market, Isobar’s potential clients, and indeed the rest of the world, would sit up and take notice.

Their innovative team created a concept where no packaging was required. Where the fruits themselves were the star of the campaign, just with slightly different outfits.

The agency designed and created ‘juice box’ molds, which are then hung around the growing fruits on the farms in Paranapanema, São Paulo, Brazil. As the fruits grow to full size, they take on the shape of the molds and, amazingly, the branding of the client.

These carton shaped fruits are then displayed in supermarkets as novelty advertising items for people to marvel at, eat and more importantly, tell their friends about: thus spreading the company name and the idea of their incredible freshness. Clever stuff eh?

We love to see agencies pushing the boundaries and creating concepts which are unusual and inspiring. Advertising is a tough old game and many campaigns, however expensive and beautifully executed, are lost among the vast array of advertising concepts thrown at us all daily. What really stands out is work that has been well considered by a team who are passionate and keen to push the boundaries.

Many people have damned this campaign, saying that the idea defeats the object of it’s concept (promoting all natural juice) because what they have done to the fruit is, in reality, unnatural. However, it has got people talking world over. So surely, the campaign is a success either way? At ADO towers, we love the idea. What do you think?

Maro Developments

This week sees the launch of our latest website for Maro. Developers of fine properties both commercial and residential, the Maro team asked us to create a website and range of marketing literature which represents their stylish and diverse range of realty and assists their potential clients in perusing their range of exclusive properties.

The design team chose a striking, modern theme which, when combined with sharp photography, gives the cutting edge, upmarket feel that Maro were hoping to achieve.

Vintage PAN AM Covers by George Tscerny

Sometimes, when looking for design inspiration, it can be beneficial to look back into the past. Simple, classic design will never date and the works of George Tscherny are a great illustration of this point.

We have been admiring his classic PAN AM guides. George Tscherny completed a vast range of work for Pan Am in the early ’70s, redesigning everything from timetables to stewards’ aprons over the course of two years. These city guides beautifully demonstrate how simple, striking graphic elements combined with understated typography can have serious impact.

Osaka Station City Water Clock

We are a bit blown away buy this incredible water clock which is positioned in Osaka Rail station, Japan.

Take a look at it in action here-

The dot matrix water clock shows the time interspersed with astonishingly complex graphics, all with drops of falling water. Incredible.

Minimalist Poster Design

These fantastic hyper-minimalist poster designs depict classic children’s stories. These beautiful designs prove that sometimes, the most understated graphic elements can offer the maximum impact. We love the way the designer of these posters have selected small elements within the classic tales to communicate their message. Clever stuff.

These posters are available for purchase here.

The AquaDom – Berlin

Have you seen The AquaDom in Berlin? the 25 metre tall cylindrical acrylic glass aquarium is located at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Amazingly, it features a built-in transparent elevator. Guests can marvel at over 1,500 fish of 50 different species as they glide to the top of the building. The aquarium lights glow at different intensities throughout the day, creating a constantly changing spectacle.

Coming in at a cool 12.8 million euros, the AquaDom is the largest acrylic cylindrical aquarium in the world, with a diameter of about 11 metres. The feeding of the fish and the cleaning of the fish tank is performed daily by 3-4 divers. What a great job!

So, rather a pricey feature for Radisson. It is however, beginning to pay for itself. It attracts many curious tourists and hotel guests and is now the main attraction of the Berlin Sea Life Centre.

Toca Boca

Recently some colourful ads have caught our eye, popping up on some of our favourite design websites. Well, the ads are working because we just couldn’t resist having a quick snoop to see what the colourful illustrations are all about.

Turns out, Toca Boca is a relatively new company who specialise in developing digital toys and games for kids. Part of the Bonnier publishing group, Toca Boca develop games that are fun and functional as well as looking great. We just love the fantastic characters and designs. It seems we are not alone, the company has just passed 5m downloads 10 months after launching its first app.

“We reached 4m in December and then 5m on 15 January, with December being by far the best month we’ve ever had,” says chief executive Björn Jeffery. “We have a fairly sizeable team of 12 people now, but we were profitable in December, and now have around 200,000 daily active users.”

Jeffery says that one key lesson from Toca Boca’s first 10 months as a business is the power of free. “It gets the word out for sure: whenever we give something away for free, everything else sells more,” he says.

“You have to get out of that media mindset of thinking that if you give something away for free, it’s impossible to charge for it again. We’ve found the opposite effect. When we give something away, we sell three, four or five times more of the thing that we’re selling.”

So it would seem that word of mouth and giving something away for free wins the day as usual. When it comes to apps, the options are endless so standing apart from your competitors is a challenge. This can be said for any business, and these rules can be applied to most companies. Quality work and a clever strategy are key ingredients to success. Toca Boca are proving this theory in style. Supercute, colourful style.

eBay ‘Colour Swatch’ Fashion App

Online retail giant, Ebay, have rolled out an impressive update to it’s fashion app available for iOS devices. This update allows shoppers to source items which match any colour or pattern using ‘Image Swatch’ technology. Shoppers can upload an image of a fabric, colour or pattern, perhaps a friends outfit, a piece of art or even a wallpaper design and quickly find items that have a matching colour or pattern.

Melanie Smallwood, UK Head of Fashion Brands for eBay, said: “The latest eBay Fashion app takes shopping one step further by allowing people to search for designer, branded and vintage merchandise at the moment of inspiration whenever and wherever they are. Whether it is a unique pattern or a colour that is to die for, the eBay Image Swatch will allow people to target their search like never before, truly reflecting their individual style.”

eBay has become the UK’s largest online fashion marketplace attracting larger brands such as French Connection and House of Fraser to sell their wares directly through the site. eBay state that an item is sold every second through their site via a mobile device, with fashion topping the rankings for most searched category. eBay’s mobile apps are available in more than 190 countries in eight languages, and have been downloaded over 78 million times globally.

Pretty impressive stuff for a web concept which initially started as an outlet to trade Pez candy dispensers!

Illustrate Your Point…

With the big bad world of web often dominated by corporate sites and business based ideas, the art side of ‘art and design’ is not often something we get to indulge in. Don’t get me wrong, we appreciate the benefits of design software. Its an imperative tool that we utilise every day to quickly develop ideas and bring concepts to life for our clients.

The benefits of these digital tools are astounding, but every now and again, we like to remind ourselves of what we love about design. Not just sharp lines and bold graphic shapes, but flowing illustration, messy paints, screen prints and and hand crafted ideas.

Here is a selection of some of our favourite finds this week…

More Clever Advertising…

You know when something horrific happens, and you don’t want to look, but you can’t take your eyes off it? Well, why not play on that aspect of human nature to advertise your product? That is exactly what Radio 2 in New Zealand managed to do with this hilarious billboard campaign…

Ingenious!

New Conference Table?

We have been searching for a new conference table for our meeting room. This one seems to have generated some excitment in the studio. What do you think?

This convertible games table from Fusion Tables means that this stylish piece of furniture could be used for meetings and leisure. Would we actually get any work done? Possibly not. But our pool skills would improve no end…

Thomas Heatherwick Designs

The business of creativity runs through the blood of designer, Thomas Heatherwick. His grandmother established Marks and Spencer’s first textile studio, his aunt, Claire Tomalin is an esteemed biographer, his mother is a collector and dealer of fine beads and his father studied at the Royal College of Music.

After studying at the Royal college of Art, he caught the eye of design legend, Terrence Conran who describes him as the ‘Leonardo da Vinci of our times’. Conran assisted him in his final degree project by lending him the garden of his Berkshire home, Barton Court. This successful project and the backing of the great design mogul understandably generated a great deal of interest and new business for Heatherwick. The rest, as they say, is history. Heatherwick has been the recipient of the Prince Philip Designers Prize and the London Design Medal, and in 2004 became the youngest practitioner to be appointed a Royal Designer for Industry.

Heatherwick studio has some serious design kudos and their visionary projects are breathtaking to say the least. A showcase of these projects will be exhibited at the V&A between 31st May and 30th September. May will be a busy month for the talented Mr Heatherwick who will also be releasing a new book, simply titled, Making.

“At the heart of his Studio’s practice is a profound commitment to elegant, integrated design solutions and the absolute dedication to materials, research, prototyping, industrial collaboration, tactility, texture – and above all, extraordinary form-making”

We will most definitely be heading down London way to enjoy the exhibition and to be inspired by the wonder of his incredible range of projects, from the spinning chair to the Seed Cathedral.

Nick Cave Brochure

No, not that Nick Cave, not the one with the Bad Seeds. I bet he gets that a lot. Nick Cave is chair of Fashion Design at the School of Art Institute in Chicago. His art has been described as an exploration of “…when textiles meet modern dance…”

This incredible brochure set was designed by Allison Wilton to showcase his work. Beautiful photography combined with sharp graphics and the finest quality print stock, make this superb project a work of art in itself.

Each of the three brochures is contained within an iron-cross folder which opens to reveal details of intricate beading and patterns from Cave’s pieces. The details are printed with a one colour spot halftone in neutral gray, to accentuate the vividness of the colours in his textile work.

Google Seaview

So, we’ve all got our heads around google street view. We’ve played with it, had a good look around the planet and utilised it’s vast capabilities to their maximum effect by looking for our own houses to check if we can see our car parked outside.

But what about the rest of the planet? The undiscovered underwater world. Right now you can have a good old snoop around Australias Great Barrier Reef, without even having to squeeze into a wetsuit. Google have colaborated with the Catlin Seaview Survey, the project is a joint venture between them, the University of Queensland and their sponsor, a multinational insurance firm called the Catlin Group.

The group plan to roll this out to many other parts of the ocean, allowing us all to view and explore the mysterious depths.

Incredible, specially designed cameras for the shallow reef survey take 360 degree, geo-located panoramic images every 4-6 seconds while traveling at a speed of approximately 4km/h.

Simply amazing.

GM Futurliner – The Coolest Bus Ever?

Is this the coolest bus ever made? It certainly doesn’t resemble the miserable peasant wagons we see trundling through the traffic on a usual day!

How marvelous it would be if all busses were designed with such amazing style! The GM Futurliners were designed by Harley Earl for General Motors in the 1940’s. Only 12 were ever made, they travelled the States for GM’s Parade of Progress displaying the latest technology of the day.

We thought it would be fun to get one and re brand it as the ADO wagon. We could travel the country spreading the word. However, only 7 are known to still exist. The last one to be auctioned in 2007 sold for a record breaking $4,000,000 (plus premium) so they are just a tad out of our price range just yet. Maybe next year.

Manchester Civil Justice Centre

Here at ADOmedia, we really love a bit of innovative design. From art to architecture, we can’t get enough! We often spend time gazing, slack jawed upwards at the amazing buildings that we encounter on our travels.

One such building lies smack bang in the heart of our fine city of Manchester. The Civil Justice centre is the largest court building to be built in the UK since the Royal Courts of Justice. The working courts and offices are expressed as rectilinear forms, articulated at each floor level.

We are always expecting these large jutting blocks to move around, they look as if they should slide into place to suit the movements of the sun. Unfortunately, they don’t. However, the building remains as a fantastic architectural feature of the city and yet another great source of design inspiration.

Saville Row Protest

Students take note, THIS is how you organise a protest. No need for riots and throwing things around, how uncouth! Simply dust off your finest attire, organise some decent, well designed signage and gather enmasse for a jolly old get together. Don’t forget to politely ask the press to come along and take a few pictures for the morning papers.

Last week, London’s most satirical folk spruced up their facial hair, dusted off their monocles and donned their finest to take to the city’s famous, Savile Row. The Row is the home of bespoke English tailoring, famed for supplying the worlds most beautifully crafted suits and with a distinguished history spanning the decades.

The small, immaculately presented group decided to take a stand against American retail giant, Abercrombie & Fitch who are proposing to open a children’s store on the aristocratic street. The dapper protesters feel strongly that this area should remain as the home of bespoke tailoring, not mass produced casual wear.

Do you know what? we think they are right. Keep up the good work chaps and chapettes! Certain things, such as fine British design, craftsmanship and heritage, should most certainly be preserved! What What?

Poster Boy

Here at ADOmedia, we love a good poster design. This sort of work offers an opportunity to get really creative with colour, typeface, photography and graphics, something our designers just love to do! With much of our time dedicated to more corporate projects and designs for the web, we don’t often get a chance to get stuck into more artistic print work, and many companies today favour a more digital approach to promotions.

However, great poster design will never lose it’s impact. Here are a few examples to prove it…

Are you looking to promote a product or event? We love to get artistic and can offer a range of print services from flyers to posters. Go on, give us something really juicy! Take a look around the website to see some examples.

Nice Package

Yesterday we took a look at some ingenious marketing campaigns and how advertisers are pushing the boundaries to catch our attention. But advertising alone won’t sell your product, packaging design also plays a huge role.

If you have a product which is stocked in a large outlet and sits shoulder to shoulder with a hundred competitors, getting it noticed can be a challenge. Once again, ingenious design will set it apart. We are suckers for a decent bit of packaging and have been known to purchase unnecessary items simply for the beautiful design work!

Here is a small selection of some of our recent favourites…

Clever Advertising

In everyday life, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements. From the minute we open our eyes in the morning we are surrounded by branding. As such, we have all developed techniques to block out aggressive marketing and subconsciously ignore anything that does not instantly appeal.

Clever agencies have realised that it takes more than a flashy print ad or billboard to catch our cynical eyes and capture our ever diminishing attention. It takes a lot to impress us these days and campaigns lacking in innovation no longer cut the mustard.

The most astute marketing agencies have devised campaigns which utilise our surroundings in ingenious ways to amuse and inspire us. This is the key to earning our valuable attention. Here is a selection of our favourite recent examples-

Infographics

You may have noticed that infographics are suddenly everywhere. Far from simply being a useful way to illustrate information, they can also be great examples of beautiful design work. Here is a small selection of some of the best we have found…

Fancy A Brew?

How do you take yours? your music that is. If the answer is up beat, fresh, edgy and fun, then four piece band, Brew Ha! Ha! is well worth a listen, and a look.

The East London based, new wave rock and rollers, offer up some serious beats and distorted, funky guitar riffs infused with a subtle hint of Bowie and just a dash of Talking Heads. The studio has been buzzing with their sounds while we worked with the guys to create a website and branding which accurately reflects their unique sound and convivial style which has been coined ‘Brute Pop’.

Brew Ha! Ha! official website

Playing on their trademark hard hitting and brutal sound which is intertwined with organic, retro guitar work, we sourced an image of one of the infamous Yugoslavian communist monuments, which, when combined with a super modern typeface and vivid bold colours, injects some serious punch and eye-catching style to their brand. The website offers instant access to their 3 freshly mastered EP tracks and a point of contact for fans and promoters to get in touch with the band, or sign up to their mailing list for their latest news and dates.

We think the finished result makes some serious impact, which is exactly what we predict Brew Ha! Ha! will be doing to the music industry this year.

Take a look at their new website here and wrap your ears around their featured tunes. What do you think folks? Let us know.

A Volkanic Evening…

When a person is truly enthused by what they do, it emanates. When they can articulate that enthusiasm with well-researched facts and a genuine passion, it is simply infectious.

Last night we were lucky enough to be treated to a talk by one such person, in a very intimate setting with a decent coffee and a quality Sauvignon, surrounded by a handful of like-minded creative folk. It was fantastic.

As Global Head of Business Development – Games at Research In Motion, or BlackBerry as you may know it, Volker Hirsch is used to a slightly larger stage than the floor of the Inca Café in Macclesfield, and watching him speak, you imagine that he could certainly fill it. His genuine in-depth knowledge, understanding and passion is truly inspiring, not only because of the subject matter, which was certainly an eye opener, but because of his palpable energy and conviction.

So often in this industry, it is easy to be caught up in your own work bubble, to deal only with your clients and colleagues and spend little time with the other creative, passionate and hard working people who surround you and share your line of work. It is all too easy for people offering digital services (and in all industries, I imagine) to fall into that trap of seeing your work simply as a way to make a quick buck. Get a job in, churn it out as quickly as possible for maximum profit, get paid, go home.

Last night’s meeting, and the fact that talented people, who could have been at home having made their day’s wage, came together to listen to what Volker had to share and to meet and share their own knowledge, was inspiring to say the least. Being creative is what it is all about, being passionate and genuine. Doing your absolute best with every job, not because it makes you more money, but because you love what you do and take unquestionable pride in your work. Because your work is who you are.

Later, over a few drinks, Volker talked earnestly of the importance of doing what you love, not simply for financial gain, not for recognition, but because it is the only way to truly live. Do you know what? He’s right.

Team ADO would like to say a big thank you to Volker for giving up his evening, inspiring us, and being a genuinely great chap. And to Chris @ Abstraktion, another genuinely great chap, for using his valuable time to organise the Digital Edge meet ups, getting us out of the studio and amongst like-minded and inspiring individuals who have given us a feeling of renewed vigour and excitement.

We love what we do, we take true pride in our work and we will never compromise on this. Changes happen and sometimes the proverbial dung hits the fan, but last nights meet up reminded us that we are on the right track. We are lucky to be surrounded by like minded people who just want to share their passion, who do take pride in their work and a genuine interest in yours. We will move forward, inspired, and continue to do what we love with pride and enthusiasm. Can you say this much about your work? If not, get on with it! It feels great.

Farewell…

Tom and AlexWell, what can I say? It’s been a crazy old couple of weeks here at ADOmedia.

Some big changes are afoot. One of the biggest is the sad departure of company relic Mr Tom Tong. He has been here from the beginning as co-founder of the business and has put in 6 and a half years of hard graft. That means 6 and a half years of putting up with Alex’s ramblings, frosty offices, dodgy developers and hard months as well as breakthrough days, exciting changes and the big move to a slightly warmer studio.

He has made the tough decision to spread his wings and flutter off to pastures new. With a sniff, we have waved him off from the towers and would all like to wish him the very best for the future. Among other things, we will miss his grumpy little face, ultra strong brews and in depth knowledge of all things Steven Seagal. His screams of joy during breakthrough moments will no longer echo through the chambers of ADOtowers, but if you listen carefully you may just hear them from his new abode. We would like to say a big thank you for those 6 and a half years, we couldn’t have done it without you. Now go Mr Tong, onward to the big wide world beyond. But remember to pop in for an ultra strong brew from time to time.

Suits You…

When making the decision to invest in an online presence, it is always worth weighing up your options. Whether you are starting from scratch or need to update, your website is of great importance to your overall business appearance.

It is, more often than not, your clients and potential customers first point of contact with your business. The internet offers a million options at the click of a button, so if your website fails to impress, because it doesn’t look right or function correctly, those customers can very easily skip off to your competitors within a matter of seconds, and that’s it, you’ve lost them to the man down the cyber road with a better site where they can quickly access what they need.

Let’s think of it like purchasing a suit. Of course, there are many options out there. An off the peg number from your average high street shop will cost you a great deal less and it might fit OK. Never mind that it’s a bit tight around the bottom and that the button at the front is coming a little loose, and you can’t put your change in the pockets because it falls into your shoe. It’s cheap right? It’ll do for that wedding next week. But what about when you get a bit tipsy and try to do an MC Hammer on the dance floor? When the seam rips open and reveals your derriere to your wife’s family what will you do? Call customer services? I don’t think so.

What if you had just spent a little more in the first place and invested in a decent suit? A nice little number, made to fit by someone who knows what they are doing. Someone who will take your measurements and invest a little time in creating something that will not only give a great first impression, but will also stand the test of time. For years to come, you can arrive at formal occasions in style and never have to reveal your nether regions on the dance floor.

OK, so I may seem to have gone slightly off the point here but the analogy is quite apt. A case in point is our good friend and now client, Chris. His pub, The Wharf, is a fantastic local establishment and, as a smart Landlord and businessman, he had the good sense to get a website organised to promote it. After looking around, he chose to go with a company offering off the shelf websites at low, low prices. Saving money, a great investment right? Wrong.

The problem with these providers is very much the same as the cheap suit. They are not made to fit. They will not follow your current branding meaning you have a website that looks like everyone else’s, with the exception of your logo stuck in the relevant box. You then pay a rolling monthly charge which, over time, is less cost effective than getting a local agency to develop a bespoke web presence. On top of that, your customer service support is practically non existent, no names or faces to remember who you are and what your business is about.
After all this, whichever of these many companies you choose, will then own your website and domain name which you will have to purchase in order to go elsewhere. Value for money? We think not.

After a few heated debates with his provider, Chris had the even better sense to come and have a chat with us, here at ADO towers. We calmed him down, gave him a cup of tea and listened to what he wanted from his website. We have now built him a brand spanking new website, which accurately represents the quality of his fine establishment and promotes his new products and events to his patrons and potential customers.  You can view the website at www.thewharfmacc.co.uk.

The Wharf Pub in Macclesfield website screen shot

So if you are thinking about sorting out your web presence, think hard. What do you want from your providers? A quick, cheap and poor quality service from a company looking to make a quick buck? Or a friendly, quality service and long standing business relationship with a company based on experience and understanding? To be a number on a screen? Or a valued client?

The choice is yours, which would suit you?

AJ Tyzack goes live

As usual, team ADO has been working hard over the last few weeks, launching new web projects left, right and centre.

One week it’s events co-ordination, the next, a local micro brewery. It’s one of the things we love about our line of work, getting to meet a vast cross section of different people from all walks of life and areas of industry. People who are passionate about their work, who allow us to learn a bit about what they do and help them to push their business forward. It really is inspiring stuff!

This week’s launch is a very interesting project for a Cheshire based company, AJ Tyzack, who provide technical sales services for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical and cosmetic industries throughout the UK and Ireland. We used an uncomplicated colour palette of blue and black combined with a clean white background to create a fresh and clinical design, which accurately reflects the company’s line of expertise and places emphasis on the simple, punchy imagery dotted around the site, in order to quickly get their message across to potential clients. Take a look at the results here and see what you think.

Anyone for Beer?

Toby - Beer wizard in chief at Redwillow BreweryHere at ADOmedia we love getting involved with local businesses. We also love promoting products that we feel passionate about and so our latest website development for Redwillow Brewery was something of a dream project! A local business providing one of our favourite products, yes you guessed it, Beer!

The Redwillow micro brewery is the brainchild or potentially, as he puts it, “mid life crises” of owner and beer wizard, Toby. He loves beer even more than we do and has created a fantastic array of pale ales, porters and IPA’s in a range of flavours that even Willy Wonka himself would be proud of (had he actually existed and made beer rather that chocolate of course!) Toby chose our e-commerce and content management package which will allow him to sell his products to those who wish to stock up for home enjoyment, promote his brewery to the more discerning establishments and keep his customers up to date with his latest produce, news and events.

Redwillow Brewery web site screen grab

The new website has a pared down, clean and modern look placing emphasis on the striking bold colours and elegant design of the company logo which is displayed throughout the site in the comforting and evocative form of pump clips. Take a look here to find your nearest retailer or drinking hole stocking the delectable Redwillow ales.

Why not step out and try one (or three) for yourself and let us know what you think. It is Friday after all… enjoy!

Heaton House Events

This week sees the launch of our latest website designed and constructed for our good friends and clients, Heaton House Farm. Heaton House Farm is a picturesque wedding venue set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside (so picturesque in fact that our very own business manager Steve has chosen it for his impending nuptials!). To compliment their existing venue business they have now established a secondary company offering a fully comprehensive events co-ordination service. A one stop shop if you will. Introducing… Heaton House Events Ltd!

Taking the stress out of organising a wedding with Heaton House EventsIf you are organising a wedding or a special party, the clever folk at Heaton House Events Ltd can offer up their extensive knowledge and experience, utilising their vast array of useful contacts and expertise to help you to organise the perfect celebration. After all, organising a large event is a full time job in itself and can be rather stressful. Who wants to turn up as the star guest with chunks of hair torn out? Not a good look…

The new website however, does have a good look. ADOmedia worked with the client to create their new corporate identity. A sleek and simple logo design and elegant typeface combined with the rich, opulent colours of burgundy and turquoise offer impact and project the understated elegance and stylish image that represents Heaton House Events to a tee. They opted for a content management system which means that they can regularly update their new website with news, images and information so they can easily keep their clients and potential customers up to date with all of their exciting goings on. We predict a busy year ahead for them!

So, if you are planning a wedding or special event, take a look. Remember, it’s fresh on the web so new information is currently being added on a daily basis. If there is anything you can’t find just give them a call or drop them a line. We at ADOtowers can personally vouch that they are lovely, friendly folk who will be more than happy to help you out and answer your questions.

Social Media Marketing – But… why?

Social Media Marketing - ADOmedia

So, you’ve got your business off the ground and running smoothly, your website is full of interesting content and is looking rather impressive. You’ve established a reasonable client base and things are beginning to look peachy. What now? How do you keep that client base from running off with another company? How do you continue to build and entice new business? How do you increase your website traffic?

Word of mouth is the best marketing tool, as they say. There are a whole lot of mouths out there and more of them could be talking about your business.

Is social media marketing really that important?
There’s been a great deal of talk about the considerable importance of social media marketing. But is it really that important? Will it actually make a difference? Do I reeeally have to do it? The answer to these important questions is, well yes. Whatever business or service you are promoting, social media marketing will make a difference. The benefits of utilising these marketing tools are vast, and investing in your social media presence will undoubtedly have a positive effect your companies image, search engine position and eventually, sales.

Why does it work?
The way that marketing works has changed rapidly over the past couple of years and this is no bad thing, but adapting is important. People have a great deal more control over the information they receive and choose to respond to, making it far less likely that they will consider, or even look at spammy emails or blanketed leaflet promotions. What they are more likely to do is follow the social media profile of a company because they have dealt with them previously, have an interest in their services, or simply like the cut of their jib. So, that effectively covers all of your bases: existing, new and potential clients.

Social media bridges the gap between company and customer utilising a more friendly and informal approach. By providing your followers with interesting, relevant, and free information, you are forging an image and reputation of a business that is proactive, current and up-to-date. An effective campaign will help you to develop loyal fans and will subtly direct people back towards your company website, thus advertising your services and improving the perceived significance of your website to those all-important search engines.

Select the image below to view a fantastic infographic by the guys at MDG Advertising:

Is social media marketing effective?

How long will it take to be effective?
Now I’m not saying set up a Twitter account and you will wake up the next day to an influx of new business. Unfortunately, it’s just never that simple is it? Like any marketing campaign, these things require considerable time and effort. Think of it like scattering seeds across the Internet garden. Have a look at them every day, water them and have a little chat with them every now and again. Keep nourishing these planted seeds and eventually little shoots will start to grow, and these small blooms could become a large shrubbery, perhaps even a tree one day. Oh how very poetic.

Anyway, the point is that this whole social media business is not going to disappear. Don’t be afraid of it. Don’t poke at it with a stick then run away. Embrace it! If you are passionate about your business, then promoting it is something that must be done, and done well.

Help?
Time can be an issue. Ensuring your clients are well looked after and the day-to-day tasks are completed can be time consuming enough. Acquiring the extra hours and required knowledge to establish and manage a successful web marketing campaign can be daunting.

As per usual, we can help with this. We have a whole wing of ADOtowers solely dedicated to this sort of malarkey. If required, we can set up your blog and social media accounts. We will research your market, competitors, current trends and potential clients in order to populate your web site and social media accounts with relevant, quality content. We can do all of this on a continuous, regular basis to ensure that your web campaign stays fresh, well tended, and up-to-date. A bit like hiring a gardener.

Why not give us a call? We will be happy to discuss your requirements and help you to plant a few seeds of your own. Develop a social media marketing campaign and see what you can grow.

SOPA – What does it all mean?

So, everybody’s talking about it. Thanks to the actions of web giants Google and Wikipedia among many others, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) has been brought to everyone’s attention. But what the devil is it? Do we really understand it? Why all the fuss? Is it really such a big deal?

There is a whole lot of techy guff on the web, which inevitably dissuades non geek speak folk from learning about it and perhaps makes one assume that it won’t be an issue for you, but hang on! If you are an Internet user in any capacity, this WILL affect you. But panic not! We have chewed it up and digested it and set it out in handy bite sized pieces so that you can get the down low on some of the major issues and controversies surrounding it. We’re nice like that.

Now just bear in mind that this issue is huge and the potential problems it throws up could fill several blogs. I have really pared it down but have included links to more in depth analysis, y’know if you’re into it. Take a few minutes, have read and see what you think about it all…

The legislation that members of the US government are proposing is, on paper, a way of protecting US property and preventing fraud, ie: laws to stop the sales or theft of movies, music and counterfeit goods. Sounds fair enough I hear you say. The problem is in the law itself and the repercussions it poses. Where the law would work, is if for example, a website operating from overseas was selling to the American online market counterfeit goods or enabling the theft of copyright property. These laws would allow the US government to force the website’s US providers (the domain server host, payment facilities or advertising network) to cut the web site off, effectively making it disappear from the Internet.

But oh no, it just isn’t that simple. There are many issues that arise because of this law which could also affect fair and honest web site users. There are some key phrases used within the legislation which make the whole thing rather unfair and threaten to change the web as we know it – the freedom of speech and opinion, as well as the access to knowledge and information that we all currently take for granted.

Engage in, enable, or facilitate
Lets say that you have a blog or social network, a photo or video sharing site or a website with an open forum or message board and one of your users expresses an opinion, or links to another website that could be deemed as engaging in, enabling or facilitating internet theft. Perhaps they upload a photograph or a piece of artwork that they don’t own the rights to. That’s it, they can take action to remove your website, away from view of your potential customers or viewers… Just like that!

It’s very much a shoot first; think later approach and small businesses will suffer. It can very expensive to defend yourself legally and without the budget to put precautions in place, the whole freedom of Internet business is lost. It will discourage web site owners from linking to other sites for fear of association, effectively curbing communication, information sharing and innovation.

What’s slightly more disturbing is the Misrepresentation section of the legislation.

Knowingly materially misrepresents
In layman’s terms, this section means that lets say your website was wrongfully taken down, and you lost revenue because of this (in some cases, lets say Facebook for example, a few days of lost revenue could be millions perhaps billions of dollars) the government could not be counter-sued because they may only have thought that your web site was infringing laws. They have well and truly covered their rotund American butts.

How can this be I hear you cry? What fools would even suggest that such laws would be viable? Well, the main supporters of SOPA are The US chamber of Commerce, the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and the Recording Industry Association of America. The movie industry, the music industry and the chamber of commerce. All of whom seem to be very much in bed together, quaffing champagne, splashing ridiculous amounts of cash around and complaining about how many jobs are threatened by copyright violations on the web. There has been much controversial talk of back handers and major financial influence affecting the decisions being made within the government.

Now yes I am a little biased, but I do appreciate that something needs to be done to protect these industries and their copyright laws. But is SOPA really the answer? I think not. Yes, many jobs are threatened by these infringements but how many more will be threatened by this law being enforced? The main problem is that the law is too vague and the wording used allows a ridiculous amount of power and restriction. How can the American government be allowed to make these decisions? Decisions that affect every single person who uses the free Internet as we know it? This law, if passed will literally change the world. So yes, it’s kind of a big deal.

Many people who support SOPA hold the majority vote where it really counts. The lawBraveheart (or at least major parts of it) is dangerously close to being passed. The floor vote is open on the 26th January. However, the overwhelming response of protest means that this vote will probably be delayed. But it won’t go away. Keep an eye on it, do what you can do. If you are reading this on our blog then you are an Internet user and it WILL affect you. It really boils down to freedom of speech. Surely censoring the Internet to this extent takes away everything that it represents. So come on folks, fight the good fight.

In the (slightly modernised) words of Mel Gibson – “They can take our illegal downloads but they’ll never take our freedom!”

Happy New Year

Well here we are, 2012 already and the first blog of the year. I don’t know about you but I for one was pretty sure we would be in the future by now, you know, hover boards, silver suits and the like. Still, certain aspects of those futuristic movies from childhood are very much upon us and here at ADOtowers, we love getting to know all about them and how to utilise them for our clients and ourselves. This year looks set to be another great one and we have some very interesting projects and exciting developments lined up. We will of course divulge more details and keep you up to date with our futuristic new plans over the coming weeks (we like to keep you on your toes y’know).

The future? To kick off the new year we also have a brand spanking new member of the team. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mr Steve Taylor! our fresh faced new recruit and ADOmedia’s very own business development manager. He’s settling in very well at the towers, making himself at home and helping us to take care of our clients, new and existing. We can’t have the standards slipping now can we? So please be friendly and if you see him about the towers just give him a little wave.

So no silver suits as yet I’m afraid but the new year is a great excuse to have a fresh start. Like almost everyone else, here at ADOmedia we are thinking about clearing out the cupboards, chucking out those old Christmas biscuits and replacing them with something fresher. We’re limbering up, dusting down and generally trying to get a bit better looking, healthier and more productive for the new year. But enough about our beauty routines, we are also taking a fresh approach to business.

Many potential clients and customers will be looking to shake things up a bit and get things moving. Are you ready for it? Why not take a look at your own marketing campaign? If your web presence is looking a little ‘last year’ or your web marketing campaign has been pushed to the back of the cupboard, give us a bell. We are happy to help out with new ideas and we are always available to offer advice on your next step.

Now really is the time to get things moving. Be it updating your existing web site for a something a little racier, a little more “twenty twelve” or putting your back into promoting your existing website, pushing it up the search engines and building your client base, we are, as always, here to help.

Why not give us a call, say hi to Steve and get things moving? Lets see what we can do this year…

Christmas Shutdown

Following a fantastic year of business at ADOtowers the team are being treated to a well deserved break! Therefore we will be closing the studio over the Christmas period from 22nd December until 5th January 2012.

On behalf of everyone at ADOmedia I would like to thank each and every one of our loyal clients and suppliers. Your help and support really means a lot and we hope to work with you all again next year!

Have a fantastic Christmas and see you soon.

Is your website getting the right results?

It is now well understood by almost all business owners that a website is no longer just an option, but a necessity. From a simple contact page to a full blown e-commerce shop, whether you are a local butchers or a blue chip corporation, no question about it, having a web presence (and a decent one at that) is absolutely imperative.

However, what is not always understood is how to drive the relevant clients towards that website. Now we do understand that not everyone is as interested in these things as the geek squad here at ADOtowers, but let me put it this way, would you open a shop in the middle of nowhere and then sit back and hope that the right people found it? You could be selling the finest, juiciest produce known to man but if you didn’t put any signs up to point people towards it then who would know? Its just bad business. The same goes for your website. Cyberspace is a big old place and without the right advertising how on earth are your customers and potential clients going to find you?

It’s a complicated old business pushing your way past your competition and getting your website where it needs to be. It requires a lot of work and know-how and can be a bit daunting but hey, don’t panic… we can help. After several queries from our clients about getting their shiny new websites up the search engines, we decided to clear out the west wing of ADOtowers and set up a brand spanking new department solely dedicated to SEO (that’s search engine optimisation to those of you who don’t speak geek). We have done our homework and called in the experts… and, as with all of our services, we are absolutely confident in offering the very best optimisation around. No rock bottom priced cowboy packages or unrealistic empty promises, just good quality, well researched, effective marketing.

We have devised three different packages aimed at marketing your website through various channels. We can guide you step by step through all the best ways to begin your web marketing campaign and set realistic goals and time frames. We will help you to devise the best strategy for your business and manage your promotions to achieve the results you want.

Your website is probably your most powerful marketing tool and we are here to help you utilise it! The right website combined with the most effective web marketing campaign can truly take your business to the next level. The potential to contact the world and tell them what you can offer is something that businesses are still in the relatively early stages of grasping. Get your business in on that action and see what you can do. The web is your oyster.

For more information, please take a look here. Alternatively if you would like pop in for a chat and find out a bit more about it, we will be more than happy to explain it to you in more detail. Just give us a bell on 01625 612 198.

As a small business ourselves, we know how hard it is out there. We are passionate about providing our clients with the best possible services to help them succeed. Why not let us help your business get where you want it to be?

The final countdown!

Yes folks, it’s December already. Nope, we don’t know quite how that happened either! If you are running behind, then chances are that you may not have thought to sort out your last minute Christmas promotions or sent out your clients Christmas cards. It’s a busy old time for everyone… especially if you are running a business. But don’t forget, these last minute promotions and thoughtful thank you’s to your valued clients can really make all the difference.

There is still time to send out your promotional e-shots and jovial e-cards. Just drop us an email or give us a bell on 01625 612 198 and we’ll get it sorted for you, we are here to help.

And finally…

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our moustache sprouting efforts in aid of Movember and mens health, a cause very close to our… hearts. The final tally was a whopping (drum roll please)…£315.00! Tashtastic!
I have grown rather fond of mine and have decided to keep my lip warmer for a while longer, a fluffy reminder of your astounding  support and generosity. Thanks everyone!

Here is a final snap of the completed hairy appendages:

Moustache update and other things…

Yet another busy week at ADOtowers. Our nostril skirts are coming along nicely and, as I suspected, we are suddenly wielding all new powers. We are stronger, more powerful, healthier and wealthier!… well that may be a slight exaggeration but we are certainly… hairier! So far we’ve managed to raise £279.00 for Movember… and all courtesy of our magnificent chums and supporters! Thanks guys, a big old high five coming at you from team ADO. If you would like to get involved or donate then follow this link to our page. We will continue to update you with our progress until the end of the month.

This is where we are at the moment:

Alex tash 2

We will update our website with the latest photo evidence every week so you can keep up to date with our venture into facial hair.

Speaking of the end of the month, did you realise it’s practically Christmas? Yup, I hate to break it to you but we’ve got just 35 days (and 36 sleeps to go). Now before you all run away screaming from your desks to begin the frenzied panic buying, mince pie eating and gift wrapping, it might be an idea to think of your clients. It is the time as they say, to spread good cheer, so why not make them feel appreciated? The moustachioed band of brothers here at ADOmedia can certainly help.

If you are one of the lucky ones and you already have one of our websites in place, we can help you to put together an e-shot or e-card personalised for your business and emailed directly to your selected recipients. Perhaps you would prefer something a little more traditional, we can also help you to put together some eye-catching festive cards, signs, menus or flyers to promote your yuletide wares and special deals. So whether you want to simply let your clients know that you care or keep them in the loop about your merry little offers, just give us a call. We can’t speed up your amazon deliveries but can certainly help with your Christmas promotions.

Ooh pass the eggnog…

I moustache you a question…

Well it seems the world has gone moustache mad! Here at ADOtowers we are no exception.

ADOmedia have decided to embrace the spirit of Movember and produce ourselves some facial plumage, all to raise awareness for testicular cancer. The more I think about it, some of the greatest men of our time were fellow moustachios: Salvador Dali, Ghandi, Einstein, Magnum P.I and I got to thinking, could this fresh top lip sproutage be the key to some new successes at ADOtowers? Could it unleash our inner powers? or will we just look like berks? Only time will tell.

So the big question is, what shape to go for? the choices are seemingly endless. I found this useful guide here to help us decide which is both graphic and educational. I’m leaning towards Mr Copperplate, a truly classic gentlemans style. Tom is going for the Mr Bauhaus 93 – a Nick Cave-esque handlebar which we think is befitting of his serious Northern man demeanour.

The American Mustache Institute
take a very serious stance on the matter and offer up only suggestions which are approved by the certified mustacheology (CM) department at the American Mustache Institute. Most Informative.
Which one would you go for?
Answers on a postcard please!

This is where we are at the moment:

Alex's tash - week oneTom's Tash

We will update our website with the latest photo evidence every week so you can keep up to date with our venture into facial hair.

Do let us know your thoughts and keep yourself up to date with our progress in photo form. Perhaps you’ll see us out and about in Macclesfield, pop over for a closer inspection if you wish. If you would like to sponsor us then visit our ADOmedia Team page here… all donations will be much appreciated.

If you’d like to find out more about the type of work you’d be helping to fund by supporting Movember, take a look at the Programmes We Fund section on the Movember website here.

Now I’d love to stay and chat, but I really… Moustache!

First and Only Airsoft

Well our blogs are becoming a bit like busses, nothing for ages then two in the space of a week! We will endevour to keep em’ coming on a more regular basis from now on. It’s still busy here at ADOtowers, we launched another exciting website this week and we thought you might like to check it out…

Calling all adrenalin junkies!

Are you in search of some combative fun?  bored of laser quest? done with paintball? then check out our freshest website fodder for First and Only Airsoft.

And what in the name of warfare is Airsoft I hear you cry? Well let me tell you… First and Only Airsoft is the latest and (in our opinion) greatest way to don your combat gear, learn some tactical skills, burn some energy and have some serious fun.  Stuff magazine readers will soon be seeing a bit more about it when we launch our monthly ad campaign. We are pretty sure it will catch your eye.

First and Only Airsoft web site screen shot

Whether you and your friends or colleagues want to rescue a hostage from an asylum, gain experience as a sniper (practical!) or even avoid some zombies in an abandoned shopping mall then First and Only Airsoft is just the ticket!

Check out the new website here where you can read more about the exciting venues and take a look at the built-in forum to get more information from the First and Only community.

Why not have a bash? What better way is there to have fun and get fit? If you do want to make a booking then you will shortly be able to do so through our online booking system due to be launched over the next month. You might also want to stock up on some combat gear which will be available from the full e-commerce store also launching later in the month. Line up your viewfinder and watch this space!

Finally, you may or may not have noticed but we are currently advertising for a front end web developer to assist us with the increasing amount of work we are undertaking. If you think you have the skills and the ability you can find out more about the position here. We look forward to hearing from you!

Busy times…

Well… it’s been a very busy few weeks here at ADOtowers! Sorry for the distinct lack of updates but we have been working hard on some very exciting new projects.

Now I’m sure you are all itching to know what new projects have been underway so here is a taster –

Pump those quads…
Nope, were not sending you off to the gym, just take a look at Polaris Quad. We recently launched their brand spanking new E-commerce website.

Polaris Quad e-commerce website screenshot

Polaris Quad stock the UK’s largest selection of new, pre-owned and ex demo quad bikes and Polaris Rangers. Not to mention a massive selection of quad and ranger accessories, tyres and wheels, security products, ramps, quad clothing, quad attachments, trailers and quad parts. So if quads are your thing or something you want to know more about then take a gander, the new site is very easy to navigate so finding what you’re looking for is a doddle. We were quite tempted to get one for ourselves, it would certainly make getting into work a bit easier in the mornings! Which one would you go for?

NW-PA – The North West Personal Assistant Register
We recently updated and launched a new version of the existing Northwest PA register – the team worked closely with Age UK Cheshire and CCIL (Cheshire Centre for Independent Living). Now as you know, we are very modest and never like to blow our own trumpets (ahem) but, with a great deal of hard work, we have managed to create the most advanced online PA register ever launched.

NW-PA - The Northwest PA Register

The end result is a system that is simple to use for both Employers and Personal Assistants, allowing them to easily and securely search for the Right Person or the Right Job all in one place. In these tough times, we like to think that anything that makes it easier for skilled people to find work can only be a great thing. Take a look here for more information.

With all this and more going on we thought that we had better put the finishing touch to our new studio, a lovely new laminate for our door. So if you’re taking a stroll down the Chestergate, have a little look at our fresh new signage. It only serves to make it easier for you to find us. Why not pop in and have a brew? You might have to make it yourself though, did I mention we’ve been busy?

Karin Sheldon

Ami, our current work placement, has already been busy in the studio. She has just produced and sent to press this cracking editorial advert for the Sep/Oct edition of Crafts Magazine – one of the UK’s largest publications for the craft industry.

Our client Karin Sheldon, an award winning silver smith and jewellery designer, approached us with a tight deadline to create the artwork and Ami got stuck into the brief.

Karin Sheldon's Craft Magazine editorial advert

The result is impressive… the client loves the final design and we are sure that it will look great in situe within the publication. Well done and big kudos points to Ami, great first piece of commercial work there and a strong addition to the portfolio!

Hitched

Alex, ADOmedia’s Creative Director, got married in July to his long suffering partner Hannah! Although the weather played up for them the day went perfectly and everyone who attended had a great time! The wedding was held at Harrop Fold Farm, one of our long serving client’s venues and the food for the day was put on by Vanilla in Allseasons – another good client of ADOmedia… they come recommended! Photography, of course, comes care of Andy, our in-house snapper – great work as usual that really captured the day!

Hat themed wedding invite design by ADOmedia

We undertook the design of the wedding invites in-house – the end result was very sleek – they were printed on beautiful uncoated recycled board stock giving them an expensive feel to complement the design. The “theme” for the day was hats (an idea used due to the couples penchant for hat parties!) so the design incorporated Victorian inspired hat illustrations.

Congratulations to both of you from all the team at ADOmedia!

Here are a few shots of the happy couple for you to “ooooo” and “ahhhh” over!

About time Alex!

Cheshire Young Farmers Clubs

ADOmedia have just launched a fun and colourful website for Cheshire YFC. We were approached to create the new online presence as the federation felt that it was time for them to allow their members to be able to keep up to date with all the latest events going on in and around Cheshire in the farming community. The site also allows them to update their latest news and info from the Federation, host numerous galleries from past events, allow for Cheshire YFC to spread the word about their organistation and attract new members from around the local area.

The results have been very promising so far with numerous enquiries already coming in from interested potential new members.

You can view our latest produce here – www.cheshireyoungfarmers.co.uk… enjoy!

Cotesfield Farm B&B

ADOmedia have just launched the website for the newly refurbished B&B Cotesfield Farm. The beautiful working farm was recently taken over by the Morrison family and offers a warm countryside welcome to all who stay. They approached us after seeing the great work that we have undertaken in the past with 20 Albany Street and Harrop Fold Farm and the end result has been received very well by their prospective clients.

From the logo design, the external signage, the website and the printed literature and stationery, and the photography shoot ADOmedia carried out the full caboodle!

ADOmedia have just launched the new website for Macclesfield Counselling and Training Centre. The new site focuses on the events wing of their business and allows visitors to easily view and book places on the many courses, training seminars and conferences that they organise. Using a content management system the client is easily able to create events and set multiple pricing levels and attendance limits. The end result is a very clean and easy to navigate website that the client just loves – it has drastically reduced their admin time and this allows them to get on with the work they do best!

PowerPlay Golf

ADOmedia, working in conjunction with ABK Performance Sports Ltd, have just designed, built and launched the massive new website for PowerPlay Golf®. The site went live yesterday at 2.00pm sharp with a live stream of a video conference introducing PowerPlay Golf® to the world stage… hosted by non other than Peter McEvoy, Colin Montgomerie and Paul Casey (they are pretty famous golfers to the uninitiated)!

PowerPlay Golf® is a 9-hole format in which golfers choose to aim for one of two flags on the green – a White Flag and a Black (‘PowerPlay’) Flag. Players have limited PowerPlays, and score extra points for net birdies or better when playing to the Black (or ‘PowerPlay’) Flag, thereby creating extra pressure. On the PowerPlay Golf® web site golfers can register to earn PowerPlay Dollars, enabling them to climb the PPG World Rankings and compete in user-generated PowerPlay Golf® Leagues both locally and around the world. PowerPlay Golf’s format is ideal for TV, creating a complete golf tournament in under three hours. Broadcasters can televise golf in a more compressed time-frame, and increase golfing TV audiences.

So, all good news for golfers everywhere!

Krankbrother

ADOmedia have just launched the brilliant new website for London based DJ duo and promoters krankbrother. Having attended a number of their parties over the last year it was a honour to be asked to get involved with the project… they really do throw brilliantly original nights! The guys play a mix of Berlin-esque deep house and techno and have a ever growing roster of unbelievable big names from the scene playing sets at each party: Ivan Smaghhe, Dyed Soundorom, Lee Curtiss, Nic Fanciulli, Italoboyz, Namito and Martin Landsky are just a few that spring to mind!

The site design follows their musical style – minimal and low fi! The end result is a visually appealing site with ultra slick navigation and a limited colour palette to bring the full attention of the viewer to the event flyers.

We have moved

Well, it has been a hectic couple of weeks for the team at ADOmedia. Not only have we got a number of juicy projects on the work board but we have recently relocated to our new studio space (about time, I hear you say!). We are now settled in and loving our new environment. As well as a purpose built, beautifully beamed studio, our new premises also boast a bright and airy conference / meeting area. Bodyguard for hire

A lot of talk is taking place across the net regarding a new web page for an iPad and iPhone app called “Ben the Bodyguard”. Little is known about the app as the developers are playing things very close to their chests other than it is an encryption tool for your contacts and photos. However, what the app does is not what the hype is about – the hype is regarding another superb example of what can be done with HTML5. Another nail in the coffin for flash perhaps? All we know is we agree with the hype regarding the web page. Click on the link below and take Ben for a stroll now!

Macc Music

It’s finally here! After a few months of development ADOmedia have finally launched Macc Music. The aim of the website is to allow the local community of Macclesfield to be able to see what is going on on the gigging front, view and write reviews of acts they have seen and generally keep up to date with all the happenings on the music scene. With no bias towards any particular genre we hope that the site will become the areas number one portal for the music community, and, best of all – it is FREE to use!
